Mark Schultz Sings His Stories |
Singer-songwriter earns kudos for his musical storytelling
By Douglas Smith
Singer-songwriter Mark Schultz has made a career of writing songs about other people. But he wrote a very personal message on his latest CD “Broken and Beautiful.” “I was adopted when I was two weeks old,” revealed Schultz, now in his mid 30s, from his Chapel Hill, North Carolina home. “And I always wondered, what are the things I would tell my birth mom if I ever met her?"
The resulting ballad - “Everything To Me,” is a statement of thanks to his birth mother for offering him the chance to breathe, feel joy, and fall in love. “I wanted to bring that to light, because sometimes that’s part of an adoption story that doesn’t get told,” he said. With that connection Schultz has represented The Family Christian Stores' James Fund, a foundation which supports adoptions. It was also the benefactor of his 3,500 mile cross-country bicycle trip last year, which brought in $250,000.
